Ohio State and Oakland faced off in a competitive season opener on Monday, but it was Michigan catching the biggest hit after the game ended.

The Wolverines caught a vicious stray from Oakland head coach Greg Kampe during his postgame press conference relating to the recent sign-stealing allegations surrounding the program.

Kampe’s Golden Grizzlies played the Buckeyes tough, holding a one-point advantage at the halftime break. OSU battled back to win 79-73 to avoid being added to this “buy game” losers list.

After the contest ended, Coach Kampe explained why his team’s zone defense gave Ohio State fits.

“I think one of their frustrations was we knew everything they were going to do,” Kampe said. He then paused before saying, “Ooh I could make a comment right now being from Michigan, but I don’t think I will.”

Oakland University is located about an hour outside of Ann Arbor, and it seems coaches and players are keeping up with what’s going on.

The jab got a few laughs from those in the audience. Social media followers (mostly Buckeye fans) were also quick to respond.

“The laughingstock of college athletics…. the Ann Arbor Astros.”

“Greg Kampe is a national treasure.”

“We’ve got Oakland basketball talking about Michigan!”

The Wolverines are at the center of a sign-stealing investigation involving the football program. Former assistant Connor Stalions is said to have purchased tickets to games of future opponents, videotaping the sidelines and using the footage to scout.

The Oakland coach won’t be the last person to take a swipe at Michigan.
