Outback Steakhouse workers are reacting to new uniforms and a more 'Aussie' hospitality model that reportedly includes chants.
Outback Steakhouse workers are reporting major changes coming to their roles.
While the restaurant’s menu is mostly American, it uses plenty of Australian-sounding names for its dishes and heavily plays into the Aussie gimmick.
Now, workers say Outback Steakhouse is pushing that even further, in addition to a complete uniform change.
In a recent TikTok video that got over 382,200 views, TikTok user Cassidy (@cassidyrae1999) and four of her colleagues modeled the new uniforms, following a recent TikTok trend started by Outback Steakhouse workers.
Outback Steakhouse Workers Show Off New Uniforms
Cassidy and her co-workers seem pretty happy with the change.
“How outback new uniforms have us feeling,” the creator wrote in the video’s text overlay.
Using the intro to Slayyyter’s song “DANCE…,” the employees pose in their new work clothes, seemingly implying the uniforms have them feeling more attractive than the ones they wore before.
The new outfits include safari-style button-up shirts decorated with several pins, tan aprons, and, for some workers, simple army-green T-shirts.
“Good day mates,” Cassidy wrote in the video’s caption.
However, not every Outback worker is quite as excited about the makeover.
In one Reddit thread discussing the new uniforms, a server complained about both the fabric and the fit.
“I tried on the shirt and it’s meh,” they wrote. “The material feels super cheap and since they’re unisex the cut is unflattering for women imo.”
Bartenders, meanwhile, had another complaint.
“Full body apron for bartenders is crazy and looks ridiculous,” one employee wrote.
What Other Changes Is Outback Steakhouse Going Through?
Outback is reportedly changing other aspects of how its restaurants operate.
According to a recent FSR Magazine report, Outback plans to train front-of-house employees on an enhanced hospitality model this month. CEO Mike Spanos said the goal is “to deliver a fun, casual, Aussie, No Rules, Just Right experience.”
However, some employees report changes on the ground being unpleasant.
One bartender recently described the changes in a Reddit post titled “New Insane Changes,” saying they now have to participate in something called an “Aussie Rock up.”
“I am actually going to quit,” the worker wrote. “I have been working at Outback for almost 3 years and am truly at a f—— loss.”
According to the worker, the “Aussie Rock up” involves addressing the restaurant about a drink sample before leading customers in an Australian chant.
“To have to scream out to the whole restaurant about a drink sample and then say ‘Aussie Aussie Aussie’ and then the bar guests say ‘Oi Oi Oi’ AND THEN be told I didn’t do it well enough my manager and being forced to do it again… I don’t know,” they wrote. “This is kind of ridiculous.”
The changes apparently don’t stop there.
“They are encouraging us to either kneel, pull up a chair, or sit at the table with guests,” they wrote. “EXCUSE ME!?!?!? If I went out to eat and my server pulled up a chair uninivited I would be like uhhhhhhhh. There is a professional limit we should maintain…”
Other Outback Workers Have Thoughts
“They got us looking like park rangers, meat butchers and mechanics,” one commenter wrote.
Meanwhile, another bartender said the uniform wasn’t their only problem with the changes. “As a bartender, I am LIVID,” they wrote. “Like, I wanna quit over those damn long aprons and the Aussie strine.”
And even some workers who initially liked the uniforms found one major downside after actually working in them.
“We all were complimenting each other at the beginning of the shift,” another commenter wrote. “But then we realized just how freaking hot these shirts make you. I was sweating worse than I was with the black shirts.”
