Four-star college football recruit Gentry Williams signed with Oklahoma on Wednesday. However, the Oklahoma-native didn’t have quite the process that he expected.

Quite a few teams were in the mix for Williams’ commitment, including USC, Arkansas, Florida and Baylor. He is an incredible talent.

Despite the wide range of offers, from the beginning, it was always the in-state Sooners. Until it wasn’t— at least, momentarily.

Williams took an official visit to Norman in September, when Lincoln Riley was still the head coach. A few weeks later, on October 18th, he committed to play for Oklahoma.

However, at the end of the regular season, Riley left for USC. As a result, Williams, who was set to sign during the early signing period, decided to take a step back and wait.

In the meantime, new Sooners head coach Brent Venables continued to pursue Williams and pitched to him that it would be a homecoming for them both. Despite urging from Riley to flip to the Trojans like he did, and a late push from Jackson State and Deion Sanders, Williams ultimately stuck with his original commitment.

He signed with Oklahoma on Wednesday.

After making his college decision official, Williams spoke with the Tulsa World about what kept him in the Sooner State to play for Venables at OU. He said that a big part of his decision was the staff that Venables brought with him. He also said that he got all of the questions he needed answered answered.

With that being said, Williams and his family admitted that it was difficult when Riley left for Los Angeles. Their comments weren’t quite as scathing as those from Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy, who flipped away from Oklahoma, but they were telling.

Williams’ mom summed it up best.

“It was incredibly frustrating because it was kind of like being in a relationship with somebody for three years and then you find out that person is married,” she said.

Boom. Mic drop.
