A high school football player in the state of Oregon is under fire for leveling an unsuspecting opponent during the pregame ceremony. That rival was carrying the American flag onto the field before kickoff.

The reasoning behind the cheap shot is somewhat unclear. One account not affiliated with the high school attempted to provide context.

The incident came before the start of a contest between Grant and Jefferson in Portland. It was the seventh game of the season for both sides.

Fireworks started early. There is no love lost between the two league rivals. One side believes it was disrespected.

Grant High School opened in 1924. It serves grades 9-12 and has an enrollment of more than 2,100 students. Jefferson, meanwhile, is located just a skip to the northwest. It opened 15 years earlier and is best known for its basketball program, though the Democrats did win back-to-back state football titles in the early 1930s.

Grant and Jefferson are separated by less than five miles. They each compete at the 6A level and face off yearly in an annual rivalry contest.

Grant has dominated the series of late, winning eight of the last 10 games. Jefferson did pick up a win in 2024 in hopes of shifting the tides.

Emotions ran high before the most recent meeting. The first hit came well before kickoff.

A Jefferson player was seen tackling a Grant opponent as he ran onto the field. What was the reason for the cheap shot?

Why did Jefferson player tackle an opponent with an American flag?

There was an immediate belief that the flag played a role. Was the player targeted for carrying the patriotic symbol onto the field?

A social media account not affiliated with the school, but with supposed knowledge of the situation, suggests that wasn’t the case.

Instead, it insists that Grant disrespected Jefferson on Homecoming.

The account claims that Grant was asked to go around the field as opposed to crossing the playing surface for its pregame entrance. Jefferson was conducting Senior night festivities.

Grant opted not to. Jefferson players took offense. The pregame altercation was the result.

The account insists that there was no intent to “disrespect the flag.” It was more a response to rivalry hate, fueled by Grant’s disregard for Jefferson tradition.

Grant probably views it in a different light. To this point, there has been no punishment handed down by the Oregon School Activities Association. A response is expected to come this week.

The Grant Generals ultimately won the game, 35-14, to improve to 6-1 on the year. The Democrats fell to 1-6.
