Patrick Mahomes often receives criticism for his unusual offseason workouts. The joke is on his haters.

He would not be anywhere nearly as successful in the NFL without the work he puts in off of the field. That goes beyond weightlifting and conditioning, even though that too is part of the equation.

Mahomes works closely with human performance trainer Bobby Stroupe, who has been credited for playing a major role in the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback’s success. They focus on things that most people might not even consider during the training process. It looks weird, sure, but it works!

Stroupe forces Patrick Mahomes to move his body in uncomfortable ways. His belief is that “you become what you do” because “the inside of our body is more like a plant than a machine.”

An emphasis is placed on strengthening muscles that are often neglected. Stroupe encourages “wise movement.”

Their workouts often subject to criticism because they look weird. There is no denying that they look weird.

However, weird works. Mahomes is one of the greatest players in league history and would be a first-ballot Hall of Famer if he retired today.

Perhaps more importantly, the 28-year-old has stayed remarkably healthy for someone who subjects himself to big hits and often lands in uncomfortable positions. He has missed just two games since being drafted into the league in 2017.

Stroupe is not the only thing/person responsible for Mahomes’ ability to stay on the field. However, a video from Sunday’s AFC Championship reflects the importance of his unique training regimen.

Ravens defensive end Justin Madubuike got to the quarterback in the backfield and wrapped him up around the knees. Mahomes bent awkwardly but somehow managed to get back to his feet.

It was no coincidence. He became what he did.

Laugh all you want, but Patrick Mahomes’ work with Stroupe is not without reason!
