Longtime Iowa basketball starter Patrick McCaffery has reportedly entered the transfer portal. The news comes ahead of the forward’s senior season.

Making things most interesting about the decision is the fact that his father, Fran, is the Hawkeyes‘ head coach. He’s spurning his dad in hopes of finding a new home.

Nothing should surprise us anymore in the world of college sports. NIL and the transfer portal have created scenarios never before experienced.

Those include seeing a player transfer to one school for NIL cash only to return to his previous program two months later, and having third-string reserves demand six figures in order to stay on campus.

It’s made the job of roster management all the more difficult for head coaches.

And now, it seems not even blood is strong enough to keep players put!

Patrick McCaffery has entered the transfer portal.

The forward has been with the Iowa basketball program for five seasons, starting 50 games over the last three years.

The majority of that action came as a sophomore, when he appeared in 32 contests while averaging 10.5 points per game. Over his last two seasons, though, McCaffery has seen his production dip.

After starting 31 games in that sophomore campaign, he’s made just 19 starts over the last two years combined.

Points and minutes are also down, leading him to seek out other programs that could offer more playing time.

That obviously sparked a reaction online given the notable family connection.

“Even the coaches’ kids are transferring.”

“Thanksgiving is about to be really awkward in the McCaffrey household this year.”

Fran McCaffery has been roaming the sidelines at Iowa for 14 seasons, winning 280 games and making seven NCAA Tournaments. It looks like he’ll try and make an eighth without the help of his son.

We’ll see where Patrick McCaffery ends up when all is said and done. No one is safe when it comes to the portal!
