New England Patriots second-year quarterback Bailey Zappe reportedly found himself blindsided by the team’s decision to waive him on cutdown day.

This revelation came to light during Thursday’s “Patriots Unfiltered” podcast, where Patriots.com’s Evan Lazar shared insights from Zappe’s camp.

Lazar reported, “The word that I got from somebody in Zappe’s camp was blindsided. ‘We were as blindsided as you.'” The unexpected move left both Zappe and his camp in disbelief, as they had apparently not anticipated such an outcome.

Following Zappe’s departure from the active roster, he was signed back to the practice squad and the Patriots filled the void on the active roster by claiming former Carolina Panthers 3rd round pick QB Matt Corral.

Corral, now set to act as the backup to Mac Jones on the active roster, has added an intriguing layer of competition to the quarterback landscape in New England.

Reports by NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport suggest that the competition is far from over, however Zappe and Corral are expected to go head-to-head in the battle for the coveted number 2 quarterback position on the Patriots’ roster.
