Woodland Hills High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has parted ways with football coach Brian Tarrant. The decision comes amid a mysterious absence from the sidelines.
Tarrant has not coached a game since the season opener. Now, he’s officially been fired to end a four-year run with the program.
Not many details have been made public. An unnamed rules violation is believed to be at the root of the cause. The school had been relatively quiet on situation throughout Tarrant’s suspension. It will now choose to move on.

The Wolverines are one of the top programs in the Keystone State, boasting a No. 28 ranking in Pennsylvania. Located in the Steel City, they’d gotten off to a 2-1 start to the year.
That comes after a 13-2 campaign in 2025, which earned Brian Tarrant a contract extension.

Tarrant has been at the helm since 2023. He’d gone 20-9 over his first three seasons. Another deep run was expected in 2026.
That will no longer be the case. If the Wolverines do win a state title, it will not come under Tarrant’s guidance.
The coach was on the field for the opener vs. New Castle, which Woodland Hills won 45-13. He was notably absent for Game 2, a 45-0 defeat at the hands of Central Catholic.
Tarrant was again missing in Game 3, which the Wolverines won 35-33 over North Alleghany. He will not be on the sidelines for the next matchup with Fox Chapel.
Woodland Hills has fired Brian Tarrant. It will not open up on the decision publicly. The following statement was released by the school on Sunday.
“Woodland Hills High School’s administration had been mum on the subject of football coach Brian Tarrant’s absence from the team and his future. But Woodland Hills’ athletic director has let it be known that Tarrant has been removed as coach.”
Unexplained rule violation forces ouster.
Reports surfaced over the weekend of potential WPIAL rules violations, though no specific infraction has been directly referenced. We do not know whether the issue involves player eligibility, practice scheduling, recruiting, or player mistreatment.
The school won’t say.
Administration had been admittedly “mum” on Brian Tarrant’s suspension over the last few weeks. It would not explain the reason for his absence. It continues to keep things largely under wraps following the firing.
To this point, Tarrant has not publicly responded to the decision. We may not get the full scoop until he does.
