It didn’t take long for Pete Rose to find himself in some controversy on Sunday.

Before the Phillies’ game vs. the Nationals, Rose and the 1980 World Series championship team were honored at Citizens Bank Park.

There was some backlash to Rose being honored by the team after he was accused of statutory rape in 2017 by a woman claiming she had a sexual relationship with the baseball star when she was 14 or 15 years old in the 1970s.

A woman said she had a sexual relationship with the former baseball star Pete Rose in the 1970s, starting when she was 14 or 15 years old, according to testimony submitted to a court Monday. Rose acknowledged in a statement accompanying Monday’s filing that he had a relationship with the woman but said it started when she was 16. He also states they never had sex outside Ohio.

On Sunday after the ceremony, Philly Inquirer report Alex Coffey asked Rose if his presence sends a negative message to women due to the allegations against him. Rose shot down her question, which many perceived to be misogynistic.

Fans were appalled by Rose’s comments.
