Peyton Houston committed to play college football at LSU before Lane Kiffin was named as the new head coach in Baton Rouge. His father did not appreciate the recent comments from a local reporter.
He made sure to set the record straight!
It has yet to be seen whether or not Houston will have success on the highest level of college football. To put him in a box before he even arrives to campus is an unfair rush to judgement.
Who is Peyton Houston?
Houston is the starting quarterback for Evangel Christian Academy in Shreveport, Louisiana. He is rated as a four-star prospect in the recruiting Class of 2027 and ranks as the No. 9 player at his position.
The rising senior in high school played in the Under Armour All-America Game and received an invitation to throw at the Elite 11 Finals. His list of 31 scholarship offers includes schools like Georgia, Oklahoma, TCU, Colorado, Michigan, USC, Tennessee, Florida, Notre Dame and Texas Tech, among others.
Peyton Houston committed to play at LSU on Sept. 15, 2025— prior to the coaching change. Brian Kelly was fired, Lane Kiffin was hired. The top-100 recruit stuck with his commitment. He plans to graduate early from Evangel Christian to join the Tigers in January for the spring semester.
Houston, who is classified as a pocket passer, completed 66% of his passes for 3,836 yards and 42 touchdowns with only nine interceptions as a junor. However, he also ran for 942 yards and 12 touchdowns on 10.2 yards per carry.
There may not be a more pure passer in the recruiting Class of 2027. The only reason that he is not considered a five-star prospect is his frame. Houston is listed at 5-foot-10.5, 200 pounds. His height, weight and hand size might limit him on the next level. It probably won’t, but it could.

LSU analyst Matt Moscona (who is widely considered to be the most inflated talking head in the state of Louisiana) recently spoke about Houston on ESPN radio. He is thrilled about his potential.
“(I am) very excited about the future with Peyton Houston at LSU because he looks dynamic and awesome and fits the skill set of what Lane Kiffin wants. Louisiana kid and wants LSU and all that. He’s all and I love that is true. I’m fired up about it.”
However, the top-ranked quarterback in the recruiting Class of 2027 — Elijah Haven — is from Baton Rouge and committed to Alabama. Moscona is not sure whether Lane Kiffin made the right decision.
“I am also looking at a 6-foot-5, 220-pound quarterback from Baton Rouge who wanted to go to LSU. LSU made a different decision, and it makes me go, [I] hope you’re right. Peyton Houston [is] listed at 5-foot-10, 202 pounds. Elijah Haven [is] 6-foot-5, 220 pounds. He doesn’t fit the mold of what Lane Kiffin usually has at quarterback in his system, Peyton Houston does. But sometimes you break the mold for the right [guy].”
Shaun Houston fired right back at Moscona. The father of Peyton Houston questioned how he was able to pass judgement on a player that he does not know personally and has not seen throw in college.
“You painted a picture to listeners that my son was (1) Desperate to come to LSU (2) The next best choice (3) A system QB that fits a ‘Mold’ before ever being in anyone’s system. Your take is disappointing but…he’s built for this!”
Most of the replies to Houston’s post were in support of his opinion. A large number of Tigers fans told him to ignore people like Moscona, who has never coached a day in his life. They want him to know that Moscona’s opinion does not align with the majority of the fanbase. They are excited for Peyton.
Only time will tell whether LSU made the right decision to recruit Houston over Haven. He likely will not even get the chance to start for the Tigers until at least 2028.
