Over the weekend, Vontae Davis, the cornerback who infamously retired from football in the middle of a game, was involved in a car accident and arrested for DUI.

Early reports about the crash stated that Davis had hit a disabled Toyota Tundra pickup truck on the side of the highway which ended up injuring a person who was next to the vehicle.

In his mugshot after the arrest, David appeared very awake and chipper.

Seeing that photo, it’s hard to believe Vontae Davis was reportedly asleep on the shoulder of the road when Florida Highway Patrol arrived on the scene.

Now, however, thanks to numerous photos obtained by TMZ Sports, it is abundantly clear that the former NFL player was laying on the road with his eyes closed, appearing to be asleep.

When asked by officers why he was sleeping on the road, WPTV News reports that Davis replied, “I was tired.”

“He replied, ‘Yes, I had two drinks, two mixed drinks,'” the trooper’s report said. “I asked Mr. Davis where he was coming from. He replied with a name of a club. I could not understand the name. I asked Mr. Davis why he was sleeping on the shoulder against the wall. He replied, “I was tired.”

The crash involving Davis driving his black Tesla reportedly occurred around 7:47 a.m. Saturday, injuring a 59-year-old North Miami man. Davis was unhurt.

Davis was arrested after refusing to take a field sobriety test, take a breathalyzer test or provide a sample of blood and urine.

“Upon approaching Mr. Davis, I noticed that he was laying down on the right shoulder sleeping,” the arresting officer wrote in his report. “While speaking to Mr. Davis about the crash, I noticed that his eyes were bloodshot red. He had to lean on the concrete barrier wall to keep himself sitting upright. With slurred speech Mr. Davis stated that he was not injured.”

Florida Highway Patrol dash cam footage shows Vontae Davis was still struggling to remain awake after being placed in the back of a squad car.

In 2018, Davis quit during halftime of the season opener as his team, the Buffalo Bills, were playing the Los Angeles Chargers. He later explained in a lengthy statement that “today on the field, reality hit me fast and hard: I shouldn’t be out there anymore.”
