A viral video of a third-grade basketball team is making its way around social media, and it’s picking up a lot of attention. The clip is essentially a mixtape of eight-year-old kids showboating against their opponents.

Many around the NBA and WNBA believe it’s sending the wrong message, and they’re posting reactions online. They call the behavior a detriment to the future of the sport.

The footage was recorded during a 2023 Snowball Classic basketball tournament earlier this month. The film follows the on-court antics of one team, in particular, as they mock their competition at every turn.

While the youngsters’ skills seem nice, it’s their boastful celebrations that’ve garnered the most attention amongst viewers. And many of those commenting on the video are prominent professional ballers.

NBA and WNBA stars began reacting to the clip on social media, sparking a huge debate online. Where do we draw the line between fun and disrespect?

Most of those pros believe that the wrong values are being taught to these youth basketball players.

Damian Lillard echoed that sentiment, responding, “Facts, it’s getting out of control.”

WNBA players Lexie Brown and Jaylyn Agnew also chimed in, with Brown saying, “Why is there a film crew watching nine-year-olds?” Agnew wrote, “This is… a lot of things,” in disapproval.

Basketballers weren’t the only ones posting, though.

Football players Daylon Mack and Jacob Hollister also commented. Mack said, “This is the highlight culture,” while Hollister added, “We need to take responsibility as athletes in setting a better example.”

There were some, however, who disagreed. Former Ohio State football player Braxton Miller responded to the clip by saying, “Just boys having fun.”

One fan might’ve said it best. “The funniest thing is that NBA players are now acting disappointed like the kids aren’t copying them.”

Food for thought.
