OTTAWA, ONTARIO - MAY 20: Laura Stacey #7 of the Montreal Victoire lifts the Walter Cup after the win against Ottawa Charge in Game 4 of the PWHL Walter Cup Final at Canadian Tire Centre on May 20, 2026 in Ottawa, Ontario.
In May, the Montreal Victoire of the PWHL became just the second-ever winners of the league’s Walter Cup, given to the league’s champion.
Fast forward three months, and the Victoire’s replica of the Walter Cup has officially gone missing after getting lost in transit to Alberta on Friday.
Now, it appears that the league is concerned that the trophy may have been stolen after communication with the transit company failed to provide an answer as to the trophy’s whereabouts.
Did Someone Steal The PWHL Walter Cup?
While the league did not go into detail, it did issue a statement on Friday evening admitting that the trophy “did not arrive as expected at its latest stop,” and adding that “we are working closely with the shipping company to locate it.”
The details of the missing trophy only further the belief that it may have been stolen. According to a report by the Associated Press, a container did arrive in Albert. However, it was not the one the PWHL shipped with the trophy inside.
Nobody knows where the trophy was seen last, and the PWHL does not have a designated keeper of the cup, as the NHL does for the Stanley Cup.
The only good news is that the lost trophy is technically a replica. The real Walter Cup is kept permanently at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
However…
The PWHL May Not Exist Next Season
The timing could not possibly be worse for the league. The Walter Cup is named after league owners and co-founders Mark and Kimbra Walter.
If that name sounds familiar, it’s because Mark Walter is also the owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and formerly the Los Angeles Lakers.
Walter recently sold the Lakers and is embroiled in an FBI investigation surrounding his finances. Should that investigation continue, the PWHL could certainly be in the line of fire. And if that’s the case, the last story we hear about the Walter Cup could be about how it was lost or stolen.
