The Rams have signed quarterback Carson Wentz, who is now onto his fourth team in as many seasons.

Wentz, having played for the Eagles, Colts, and Commanders since 2020, will likely serve as the direct backup to Matthew Stafford. The decision to sign Wentz comes after a lackluster performance by QB2 Brett Rypien in Week 8 when Stafford was sidelined due to injury.

Ironically the Rams passed on Carson Wentz when they took Jared Goff 1st overall in the 2016 NFL Draft, and now Goff is with the Lions and Wentz is a backup with them.

Wentz has been playing badly in recent years, during his stint with the Commanders last season, he managed a 2-5 record as a starter, throwing just 11 touchdowns alongside 9 interceptions and 1,755 yards. Notably, losing to the Browns late last season, ending the Commanders playoff hopes.

Wentz’s is no longer playing at the same MVP-like level he did in the 2017 season with the Eagles. Back then, he had 3,296 passing yards, 33 touchdowns, to only 7 interceptions. Despite his decline, Wentz is viewed as a more reliable backup option than Rypien.

With the Rams currently standing at 3-6, and a recent disappointing 20-3 loss to the Packers, things don’t look good for the Rams regardless of the Wentz signing.

Coach Sean McVay said he expects Stafford to return from the thumb injury by Week 11.
