With the New York Jets once again playing meaningless football in the month of December, their head coach Robert Saleh — who has now overseen three playoffless seasons — is obviously on the hot seat.

While Saleh luckily seems to have a get-out-of-jail-free card in the form of Aaron Rodgers, the former 49ers defensive coordinator is still facing questions about his future.

When asked about his job security earlier this week, Saleh gave an answer as meaningless as the Jets are playoffless.

“No. Two types of coaches. Those who have been fired and those who are about to get fired. We coach in the moment. We coach to win a football game,” Saleh said.

Other than being meaningless motivational malarky, Saleh’s comments are just false, as there have been plenty of coaches, both current and former, who weren’t “about to get fired.” Andy Reid, Kyle Shanahan, and John Harbaugh come to mind.

Ultimately, unless Rodgers bails him out with an unlikely playoff victory next season, Saleh’s tenure with the Jets will likely never be able to overcome both the drafting and lack of development of Zach Wilson, who the team took with the #2 overall pick prior to Saleh’s first season as head coach.

This weekend, Saleh’s Jets will be hosting the Washington Commanders in what’s shaping up to be a terrible game of football as Gang Green boasts the league’s worst offense while the Commanders have the NFL’s worst defense.

In addition to their Week 15 matchup against the Commanders, the Jets — who have the longest postseason drought in American professional sports at 13 years and counting — have games against the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots remaining on their schedule.

Earlier this week, Rodgers told Pat McAfee that he not only plans on playing for the Jets next season but ideally in 2025, as well. If Rodgers did play until 2025, he’d be 42 going on 43 years old.
