Sam Hartman and Notre Dame beat Wake Forest by 38 points on a chilly Saturday night in South Bend. It marked the sixth-year quarterback’s first and only game against his former college football program.

It could not have gone any better.

Sam Hartman completed 21-of-29 passes for 277 yards and four touchdowns. He also got to enjoy a delicious chocolatey drink — with a very unexpected marshmallow surprise!

Things were so lopsided by the fourth quarter that the Fighting Irish went to the bench. While the backups got some experience on senior night, Hartman hung out on the sideline and tried to stay warm.

To do so, the 24-year-old indulged in some hot chocolate.

As Hartman wandered around with a cup of cocoa, a projectile was thrown in his direction from the student section. A marshmallow came flying down from up above and landed right in his drink. Bullseye.

Equally as impressed and baffled, Hartman looked up to his schoolmates in the crowd. He noticed a group of girls who were going absolutely bonkers despite a lack of on-field action and knew right away that they were responsible for the marshmallow toss.

The girls could not believe that they drained the shot. Nor could the quarterback!

To make the entire sequence even cooler, on the other end of the throw was a fellow student-athlete. First reported by J.J. Post of The Observer, Notre Dame track and field star Madison Schmidt was the marshmallow tosser!

The fourth-year high jumper won a silver medal at the ACC Indoor Championships back in February. She made the shot of a lifetime on Saturday!

No good hot chocolate is complete without a marshmallow. Schmidt helped Hartman out in the absolute coolest way possible.

It does beg the question of why she had a marshmallow to throw in the first place, but who cares. Schmidt will never forget Nov. 18, 2023. Nor will Hartman, for more reasons than one!
