It resulted in a Virginia touchdown, but a very scary hit that left a University of Virginia football player motionless on the field in the third quarter of their ACC matchup against Louisville is the talk of the college football world Thursday night.

The injury occurred on this play. Take a look at Perris Jones, who catches the ball out of the backfield, before fumbling it.

That’s an incredible heads-up by Malik Washington to scoop the ball up and score. But, all of that was overshadowed by Perris Jones, who laid motionless on the field.

Jones, a sixth-year running back from Alexandria, Virginia, was taken off the field on a backboard as stunned fans and players looked on. According to the UVA Twitter account, he was taken to the University of Louisville Medical Center.

People around the college football world were showing concern for Jones.

“Perris Jones is such a key person in this UVA program. Started as a walk-on and has earned everything he’s gotten. Hoping and praying he is okay,” Preston Willett, who covers the team, said.

“To see both teams on the field like this for the injured Virginia halfback reminds you that this is just a game. Prayers for VA’s halfback Perris Jones,” Mike Weinberg, a local news reporter in Louisville, said.

Nearly a year ago, three Virginia football players, Lavel Davis, Devin Chandler, and D’Sean Perry, were murdered, ending the UVA football season with two games left to play.

Coming into the game, Perris Jones had 386 yards on 73 carries, with two touchdowns. Let’s hope that he can make a full recovery.
