Robin Williams' Instagram has been revived for the first time since his death
Robin Williams’ Instagram account had been dormant since the month he died, August 2014. His three children revived it on Monday in an effort to combat AI slop.
Academy Award-winning actor and legendary comedian Robin Williams died by suicide on August 11, 2014, at the age of 63 years old following a diagnosis of Lewy body dementia.
Zak, Zelda, and Cody Williams reactivated their father’s account to mark what would have been his 75th birthday year and to push back against what Zelda described as “rampant AI abuse” of his voice and likeness.
Prior to this latest post, Williams’ account most recently posted a birthday tribute to Zelda on August 1, 2014, eleven days before his death.
Robin Williams’ children revived his long-dormant Instagram account to combat rampant misuse of his likeness made by AI
“As we recognize what would be our Dad’s 75th year, we’re grateful to see new generations discovering his work while longtime fans continue to celebrate the joy he brought into their lives,” the siblings wrote in a joint statement.
“As technology evolves, we want this to be a safe, trusted place where the stories, photos, videos, and memories shared reflect his legacy with authenticity, warmth, and care.”
This is not Zelda’s — an actress and director who helmed the 2024 film Lisa Frankenstein — first time addressing the issue of Williams’ likeness being recreated by AI.
In October 2025 she publicly pleaded with fans to stop sending her AI videos of her father, and during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike she described hearing AI-generated versions of her father’s voice as “personally disturbing.”
“To watch the legacies of real people be condensed down to ‘this vaguely looks and sounds like them so that’s enough,’ just so other people can churn out horrible TikTok slop puppeteering them is maddening,” Zelda wrote on social media.
“You’re not making art, you’re making disgusting, over-processed hotdogs out of the lives of human beings, out of history of art and music, and then shoving them down someone else’s throat hoping they’ll give you a little thumbs up and like it. Gross.”
The revived Instagram account also directs followers to official Robin Williams pages on TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube.
