Things did not go well for Scott Frost at his alma mater in Lincoln. As head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Frost’s teams posted a 16-31 overall record, never winning more than five games in a season or reaching a bowl game.

The Cornhuskers hired the former star quarterback as its leader in 2018, which led to four consecutive losing campaigns. The Huskers are on their way to a fifth season under .500 as they currently sit at 3-7.

Frost entered the year on the hot seat in 2022, but that heat cranked up after the season began. In fact, it became scalding after a Week 3 loss to Georgia Southern. The defeat to the Group of Five program was embarrassing enough for Nebraska brass to fire Frost just a quarter of the way into the year, despite the fact that his buyout would’ve been cut in half had they waited a few more weeks.

Despite the struggles with the Cornhuskers, he’s already being considered for his next job. And it’s a notable one.

PAC 12 member Cal recently parted ways with offensive coordinator Bill Musgraves following a 38-10 defeat against Oregon State. According to Cal Bears writer Avinash Kunnath, Frost could be near the top of the list to be his replacement.

Another potential Cal offensive coordinator candidate: Former Nebraska coach Scott Frost. Although Frost didn’t coach directly with Justin Wilcox, he has coached with Cal offensive consultant Steve Greatwood and defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon at Oregon.

Kunnath notes Frost’s relationship with members of the Bears’ coaching staff, and while his tenure in Lincoln wasn’t great, he’s still regarded as one of football’s better offensive minds.

It would seem to be an awesome gig for Frost, who may not have many programs calling when it comes to head coaching opportunities. Moving to the West Coast could also help him recreate his image after the failed stint in the Big Ten.

From here, it’ll be up to the Bears. Should Cal choose to go the route of Scott Frost, it’ll certainly be considered a splash hire that garners a deal of national attention.
