Scottie Scheffler is unanimously considered the best golfer in the world right now. The 2022 Masters champion played like the best golfer in the world in Thursday’s opening round.

Scottie Scheffler got off to a great start, shooting a bogey-free 66, finishing one shot back of clubhouse leader Bryson DeChambeau. The way Scottie Scheffler is playing, the only thing that may stop him from winning this championship is his wife, Meredith.

Scheffler, who entered as a huge Vegas favorite at around +450, is awaiting the birth of his first child. Meredith Scheffler is due to give birth this month.  And, Scheffler has pledged to withdraw from the tournament if she goes into labor.

But, would he? If he keeps playing this well, and has a lead on Sunday afternoon at the most prestigious golf tournament in the world, would he actually leave? It would be unprecedented, that’s for sure.

Interestingly, Meredith did not make the trip to The Masters.  Traveling 37ish weeks pregnant would surely be uncomfortable beyond belief.  But, if she had made the trip and she did go into labor, that could’ve made things logistically easier on Scottie Scheffler.

As of now, he’s got to be praying that everything stays the status quo. If it does, it’s hard to see someone else winning the tournament.
