The Mets Mourn The Loss Of Legendary Fan Seymour Weiner

Bill Streicher - USA Today Sports

The 2024 New York Mets might been the most meme’d Major League Baseball team in history. The fans of the team had fun all year as they made a Cinderella run to the NLCS when they were left for dead in May.

One of the Mets’ memes in 2024 was honorable WW2 veteran Seymour Weiner, who went viral after being the Mets’ “Veteran of the Game” during opening day last year. Sadly, Weiner passed away on Tuesday at the age of 98, and the Mets paid tribute.

Weiner lived a remarkable live and served our country bravely in World War 2 as just a teenager. He came back to the USA and rooted for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and then, the New York Mets. Last year on opening day, he had his “big break”.

To this day, I still chuckle when I see the clip, and he loved the fame, too. He went on a bit of press tour after his recognition at Citi Field, and called it one of the best moments of his life.

The Mets even had a hot dog night in his honor.

His passing was announced by the Mets on social media.

Tributes poured in, and they even recognized him on the SNY broadcast of the Mets-Diamondbacks game. The Mets honored Mr. Weiner with an 8-3 win over the Diamondbacks to improve to a ridiculous 13-1 at home and a league-best 21-9 on the season.
