Texas Football Makes Embarrassing Transfer Portal Mistake, Somehow Enters Wrong Player Into System

Texas football punter Isaac Pearson is not entering the transfer portal. That might be confusing because he was in the transfer portal earlier this week.

As it would turn out, it was an embarrassing mistake.

The transfer portal, which was implemented in October of 2018, is an expansive database that allows players to seek opportunities with other programs at any point in time. The players are entered into the system by their current program and it is done through the school’s compliance office.

A player must first provide written notification of an intent to transfer to the school. From there, the compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the request and enter the player’s name into the database. The request cannot be refused and the 48-hour timeline must be adhered to.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools are free to contact the player. That player can change their mind at any point in time and withdrawal their name.

However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored. So if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school is no longer obligated to provide a scholarship.

It isn’t a super complicated process.

The database is a standard database. A player’s individual entry, completed by the compliance office, includes basic details like contact information, if the player was on scholarship, and whether the player is transferring as a graduate student.

Texas has had multiple players enter the portal since 2018 so it’s not a new thing. And yet, the compliance office recently made a huge blunder.

Pearson, a three-star recruit in the Class of 2021, was the fifth-best punter in his cycle. He is not transferring out of Texas, but his name was entered into the portal anyway.

As it would turn out, the Longhorns’ compliance office entered the wrong punter.

Ryan Bujcevski, a three-star punter recruit in the Class of 2018, is leaving Texas as a graduate transfer. He requested that his name be entered into the transfer portal, not Pearson.

After Pearson’s name was mistakenly entered into the transfer portal, Texas corrected its error. It withdrew Pearson’s application and instead corrected it by entering Bujcevski.

WOOPS!
