Texas Tech head coach Gerry Glasco was asked to address his viral interaction with NiJaree Canady at the Women’s College World Series. He and his star college softball player are good.

Of course, it helps that Red Raiders punched their ticket to the championship series for the second time in as many years.

No matter what you think about the college softball coach’s approach to his craft, the results speak for themselves. He wins.

Gerry Glasco lost his cool on NiJaree Canady at the Women’s College World Series.

Glasco took over at Texas Tech in 2025 after a lengthy and extremely successful run at Louisiana. The Red Raiders, backed by a well-funded roster of high-profile transfers, won the Big 12 and reached the Women’s College World Series finals. They ultimately lost to their in-state rivals, the Longhorns.

And now we are here again.

Texas Tech and Texas will play in the championship series for the second year in a row. Games will be played on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (if necessary). The Red Raiders had to battle their way through the double elimination bracket to get there.

They lost to Tennessee in Game 2 and narrowly defeated UCLA on a walk-off in the ninth inning in Game 3. Game 4 was a grind against Alabama on Monday.

The Crimson Tide tied the score on a solo home run during the fourth inning. Gerry Glasco immediately pulled starting pitcher NiJa Canady from the game. He gave her a piece of his mind as soon as she sat down in the dugout.

The interaction between player and coach went viral on social media. Critics questioned whether it was the right thing for a coach to berate his player when she needed support. Others questioned whether he was going to burn out his pitchers by constantly making changes in the circle. There was a lot of manufactured controversy around Glasco’s not-so-friendly conversation with Canady.

Texas Tech’s college softball coach explained his approach.

When asked about the heated moment in the dugout, Glasco gave a very well-thought-out explanation. The reporter, to his credit, did a really good job of phrasing his question to invoke an insightful answer.

Gerry Glasco took a pause before he spoke. NiJa Canady shook off her pitching coach before she gave up the bomb. Her head coach wanted her to know that, if she was going to go against the coaching staff, it better work. It obviously didn’t!

Canady ended up throwing a shutout in the second game of the night to punch the ticket to the championship series. She was in great spirits. The viral moment in the dugout during game one did not make her want to quit. Rather, the opposite.

One of the best pitchers in college softball is inspired by her head coach and how much confidence he has in her.

Say what you will about Glasco and how he yelled at his pitcher in the dugout but she isn’t worried about it so neither should you! And, at the end of the day, Texas Tech is going to play for a national title in back-to-back seasons. Something is working…
