The other day Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods jokingly talked about doing a “winner-take-all” match during the first two rounds of The Players Championship since they were going to be paired together. (We know how much Phil loves to wager on golf… and lose.)

It began when Mickelson joked to reporters, “As I look at the cover of the newspaper and the pairing is on there and the excitement that’s been going on around here, it gets me thinking: Why don’t we just bypass all the ancillary stuff of a tournament and just go head-to-head and just have kind of a high-stake, winner-take-all match. Now, I don’t know if he wants a piece of me, but I just think it’d be something that would be really fun for us to do, and I think there would be a lot of interest in it if we just went straight to the final round.”

When Woods got wind of what Mickelson said his response was, “We’ll play for whatever makes him uncomfortable.”

As for the idea that Mickelson somehow scares Tiger, Woods replied, “Well, first of all…big picture. How many times have we won on tour?”

That would be Tiger Woods: 79, Phil Mickelson: 43. Of course, he was only messing around (sort of).

“No, no, as I said, it’s gonna be fun playing with him again. We have both have done this throughout our careers,” Tiger added. “We’ve always looked at each other and said Where is he on the board? That’s what Arnold (Palmer) and Jack (Nicklaus) used to do all the time. They’d always try to find, ‘What’s Jack at? What’s Jack at?’ And the same thing with Jack, ‘Where’s Arnie at?’ It’s been like that for our entire careers. Now that we have the opportunity to play against each other again on the first day when the gun blows, it’s gonna be fun. I enjoy either competing with him, usually, on the first or second day, or whether it’s the last day. It’s always been a blast, and he’s one hell of a competitor, so it’s gonna be a challenge to try and beat him.”

Now, whether or not Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have come to terms on a high-stakes wager or not, BetDSI Sportsbook has released some fun odds on what might be on the betting table for both golfers.

As an added bonus, as if we didn’t already want to watch, Tiger and Phil are grouped with Rickie Fowler. Their scheduled tee time for Thursday is 1:52 p.m. ET.
