Trey Lance finds himself in a tough spot this offseason.

Just a year ago, the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback job was his for the taking.

His time as the starter unfortunately didn’t last long as an injury cost him most of last season and Brock Purdy stepped up in his absence.

Now his future has become a pretty big question mark.

Amid trade rumors and uncertainty about his role, Lance revealed that there is just one thing he wanted this offseason.

Lance just wanted a chance to compete this offseason.

“My opportunity is just to come in to compete, and that’s all I wanted,” Lance said, via 49ersWebzone.com. “So for me, I don’t want to take anything away from Brock, and no one should be able to take anything away from Brock. He did what he did last year, and he deserves all the credit in the world for it. Like I said, for me, I just wanted an opportunity to compete.”

While Lance has been given the chance to compete this offseason, it definitely doesn’t appear that he’ll be competing for the job he actually wants.

Brock Purdy is locked in as the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback and it doesn’t seem like there is anything that Lance could do to change that.

Instead, he’ll be competing with Sam Darnold to be the backup on a team that drafted him 3rd overall just two years ago.

Maybe if he performs well during the offseason he’ll attract some interest from elsewhere around the league.

He’d be a relatively cheap investment for any team that wants to take a chance on his potential at this point, but until somebody actually makes a move for him, Trey Lance won’t be competing for the job he actually wants.
