10 Lionel Messi Records That Will Never Be Broken After He Announced Retirement From Argentina National Team

Lionel Messi announced his retirement from the Argentina National Team today, August 31st. This marks the end of a 21-year career with La Albiceleste which saw him make his first appearance at just 18 years old.

Messi first suited up for the Argentina National Team on August 17, 2005 during an international friendly in Budapest. Considering he retires with the greatest career in Argentinian soccer history, his first appearance is almost inexplicable. He came into the match in the 63rd minute as a substitute and was given a red card two minutes later.

Flash forward to March 1st of the following year (2006) and Lionel Messi scored his first goal for the Argentina National Team in a friendly against Croatia during a match held in Switzerland. From there, he woudl go on to win a FIF World Cup, 2 Copa Amêrica trophies, 1 Olympic Gold Medal, and 1 Finalissima. Messi also won the U-20 World Cup for Argentina.

Now that he is retiring, I thought we could take a run through nine records held by Lionel Messi on the Argentina National Team that will never be broken. Some are World Cup related and some encompass his entire senior career with Argentina.

1. Most Goals: 125

Over the span of 207 appearances (or caps) for the Argentina National Team, Lionel Messi found the net 125 times. During the 21 years he suited up for his country he averaged a goal in over 50% of the matches. With his 125 goals, Lionel Messi absolutely crushed the previous Argentina National Team record of 54 goals which was held by Gabriel Batistuta.

2. Most Appearances: 207 Caps

Lionel Messi retires with the record for the most caps on the Argentinian National Team (caps = appearances at the international level). The previous record was 147 held by the legendary Javier Mascherao. Messi crsuhed that record by appearing in 60 more matches than anyone in his country’s history.

3. Most Assists: 68

Messi might be the greatest goal scorer of all time. He is certainly in the discussion. But what puts him in the running as one of if not the best all around players in history is his ability to make magic happen.

On top of his 125 goals for the Argentinian National Team, he also has 68 assists. That’s a total of 193 goals that he had involvement in throughout his career for the National Team.

4. Most International Goals In A Single Stadium: 19

To score 125 international goals in his career means he played in a LOT of stadiums. He has 11 goals against the country of Bolivia alone including one match (6/5/22) where he scored 5 goals against the Bolivian National Team. But Messi’s favorite place to play, in terms of goal production, is the Estadio Monumental where he scored 19 international goals which is his record for the most international goals in a single stadium.

5. Most World Cup Matches Played: 34

The Argentina National Team made it all the way to the World Cup Final in NY/NJ this Summer which brought Messi’s career total of World Cup Matches played all the way up to 34. Cristiano Ronaldo ranks 2nd with 27. It seems unfathomable that Messi’s record will be broken.

6. Most World Cup Tournaments Played: 6

Lionel Messi also holds the record for the most World Cup tournaments played in at 6. He made his World Cup debut at just 18 years old and is now retiring from International competition at 39 years old. That is over half of his lifetime playing for his country.

7. Most Appearances as Captain in a World Cup: 5

Appearing in 6 World Cups total, Messi was named Captain of the Argentina National Team for 5 of those World Cup. That is a record that will almost certainly never be broken by another Argentinian player.

8. Most Minutes Played: 3,054 Minutes

It should come as no surprise that Lionel Messi holds the record for the most World Cup minutes played given that he holds the record for the most matches played.
