Victor Wembanyama lived up to his reputation as the NBA’s most electric prospect during his rookie season with the Spurs, and it sounds like he’s done a fantastic job navigating the reality he was thrust into after being drafted based on a story about an offer he received from Drake.

There was zero doubt Victor Wembanyama was going to be the top overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, and the San Antonio Spurs ultimately earned the right to secure the talents of the 7’4″ French phenom who was surrounded by a hurricane of hype when he made his debut at the start of the season.

The Spurs (who are firmly in the midst of a rebuild) ultimately finished the campaign with a 22-60 record, but the future is very bright in San Antonio thanks to the man known as “Wemby,” who is the overwhelming favorite to secure Rookie of the Year honors after averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 3.6 blocks in the first 71 games of his wildly promising career.

While Wembanyama was already used to the spotlight thanks to the attention he managed to attract while making a name for himself in France, there was only so much the man who turned 20 midway through his first NBA season could do to prepare for the attention he was going to receive once he headed to the United States.

However, it seems like he’s done a fantastic job adjusting to his newfound fame, and based on what we’ve learned about him so far, he seems to be pretty wise beyond his years; during a recent interview with The Ringer, he bluntly stated he doesn’t understand the appeal of drugs or alcohol while stressing his dedication to basketball.

That doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to have a good time, as he apparently headed to Austin with some members of the Spurs when Drake stopped by the Moody Center for the “It’s All A Blur” tour prior to the start of the season in September.

Based on what J.J. Redick had to say during an appearance on the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, Wembanyama had a chance to appear onstage with the rapper but ultimately decided to turn down the invite after he was informed he wouldn’t be able to have his teammates join him.

What a guy.
