The Minnesota Vikings have reportedly engaged in talks with the San Francisco 49ers about a potential trade for quarterback Trey Lance.
According to a source who spoke with ProFootballTalks’ Mike Florio, the conversations took place during the 2023 scouting combine a few weeks ago, and it seems that the Vikings are interested in acquiring the former 2021 Draft 3rd overall pick.
Florio notes that his source doesn’t know whether the talks are still currently happening.
Earlier today, reports emerged that the 49ers had received inquiries from several NFL teams regarding a potential trade for Lance. The 49ers have been fielding calls from interested teams, rather than actively seeking out trade partners.

It is widely believed that the 49ers are preparing to hand the reins of the team over to 2022 7th round pick Brock Purdy as the franchise quarterback moving forward, which makes Lance expendable.
The 49ers invested heavily in Lance, giving up three first-round draft picks to move up and select him in the 2021 Draft. While he is still just 22 years old, Lance has yet to establish himself in the NFL, spending most of his two-year career either injured or on the bench.
With Kirk Cousins’ contract set to expire after the 2023 season, questions will inevitably arise about the Vikings’ plans for the veteran quarterback. Cousins, who will be 35 years old at the end of his current contract, is likely to become a free agent, and it is unclear whether the Vikings will choose to re-sign him or look to the draft or free agency for a replacement.
If the Vikings were to acquire Lance, it would give them a promising young quarterback to build around for the future. However, it remains to be seen what the 49ers would be willing to accept in exchange for him, given the high price they paid to draft him just two years ago.
As the NFL offseason heats up, it will be interesting to see how this situation develops and whether the Vikings will be able to land Trey Lance.
