The Minnesota Vikings were engaged in active discussions with several teams heading into the 2023 NFL Draft, aiming to trade up “very high” in order to secure Alabama quarterback Bryce Young.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero during his appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, the Vikings’ pursuit of Young showcased their ambition to secure a future franchise quarterback who could potentially lead the team for years to come. The Alabama standout had gained considerable attention for his exceptional skills and leadership on the field, making him one of the most sought-after prospects in the draft.
However, the Vikings’ aspirations were swiftly extinguished when the Carolina Panthers snatched up Young with the first overall pick. The Panthers, recognizing Young’s immense talent and potential, were unwilling to let him slip through their fingers. With Young off the board, Minnesota’s efforts to trade up became futile, as the opportunity to acquire their desired quarterback had vanished.
While the Vikings’ pursuit of Young did not materialize, it is noteworthy that they had no interest in selecting Kentucky quarterback Will Levis, who remained available when their 23rd pick came around. Levis, an intriguing prospect in his own right, fell to the second round of the draft, eventually being chosen by the Tennessee Titans with the 33rd overall pick.
Tom Pelissero shed light on the Vikings’ intentions, stating, “They were making calls about moving up very high in the draft, but my understanding is that was for one player, and that was Bryce Young, who ended up going No. 1, and so there went any possibility for Minnesota to go get him.” This statement from Pelissero reaffirms the Vikings’ clear focus on securing a potential replacement for current starting quarterback Kirk Cousins.
The pursuit of a young quarterback signals that the Vikings are already contemplating a future beyond 35-year old Kirk Cousins. While Cousins has been a reliable and productive presence under center, the organization seems to be cognizant of the need to plan for the long term and secure a successor who can guide the team to continued success.
