Wofford big man Kyler Filewich is the weirdest free-throw shooter in college basketball. He cannot figure out how to get the ball to go in the hoop.

In turn, the fifth-year senior often gets mocked by opponents for his truly bizarre form. Even during a blowout win in the conference tournament!

Filewich, a transfer from Southern Illinois, played his final three seasons of college basketball at Wofford. The 6-foot-9, 250-pound center plays a crucially important role for the Terriers, averaging 11.9 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 27 minutes per game. Those stats could be even better if he was able to make a free throw.

Filewich made less than 32% of his attempts over the last two years. It reached such a low in February that his coaching staff suggested a new approach for the final push to March Madness— underhand.

The switch to granny-style has been largely ineffective because his motion is so spastic and jerky but it really cannot get any worse. By the numbers:

  • vs. Chattanooga — 0/2
  • @ Mercer — 1/2
  • @ Citadel — 4/6
  • vs. Samford — 6/10
  • @VMI — 0/3
  • vs. ETSU — 1/4
  • @ Western Carolina — 1/2
  • vs. Furman — 0/3
  • vs. ETSU — 1/5

That brings us to the SoCon Tournament on Sunday. Wofford played against VMI. The Terriers beat the Keydets by 20 and will play for a bid to March Madness in the final. Kyler Filewich scored 13 on 6-of-12 shooting. He also went 1-for-4 from the charity stripe.

His free throw form is so horrendous that VMI’s bench actively mocked him during the game. They laughed right in his face, while down by 15 points during the second half, for a hideous airball.

Filewich’s attempt to shoot free throws is worthy of a laugh. I think he would be the first to admit that it is just as funny as it is frustrating, even though right now it is probably more frustrating than funny. With that being said, for the Keydets to laugh in such a performative manner during a game that will effectively end their season is a tough look.
