Lake Taylor suspended and reinstated football coach Hank Sawyer on the same day.

Lake Taylor High School football coach Hank Sawyer was suspended amid a mysterious investigation by Norfolk Public Schools following a 96-14 loss. He was reinstated hours later.

No details about the probe have been provided. It is not clear if the circumstances of his most recent game played a role.

Sawyer was “reassigned to services” amid an ongoing investigation. The initial report on his suspension came around 4PM ET.

When contacted for clarity about the situation, Sawyer requested that questions be directed to Norfolk Public Schools.

Hank Sawyer was suspended.

And no one knows why. There is some speculation that it involves his decision making in the team’s latest loss to Maury. The game was not competitive. Lake Taylor trailed 52-0 before the start of the second quarter. The deficit was 89-6 at halftime.

Sawyer refused to accept a mercy rule forfeit. According to sportswriter Jim McGrath, there is no official language in the rulebook that forces the losing team to forfeit. Both sides, however, can agree to stop the competition. It’s a safety issue.

Sawyer did not approach Maury coaches about ending the game. A running clock was used in the second half of a 96-14 shellacking.

Furthermore, there was some insinuation of poor sportsmanship towards the end of the contest.

Lake Taylor players supposedly trash talked Maury after scoring their final touchdown. Tensions were high. A few days later, Hank Sawyer was suspended.

The Virginia high school football coach was reinstated on the same day.

At 7:35 PM ET, Matthew Hatfield of Virginia Preps announced that Sawyer had been reinstated as both head football coach and history teacher at Lake Taylor High School.

Only about four hours passed between the first and last update.

Despite the reinstatement, the investigation still appears ongoing. No new updates have been provided by Norfolk Public Schools. The suspension, to this point, remains a mystery.

With that said, it looks like Hank Sawyer will be able to lead the Titans onto the field for their season finale vs. Norview. The head coach has won four state titles in Virginia since taking over at Lake Taylor in 1999.
