Amid all of the other news that seems to regularly arise from the Washington Commanders, they have also reportedly recently positioned themselves to move into a new stadium. The $100 million land purchase the organization made in Virginia appeared to signal their time at FedEx Field could be coming to an end.

Now, new details have been revealed about the stadium. According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the stadium would only have 55000 seats, which would make it the smallest stadium in the NFL by a pretty wide margin.

The current smallest stadium in the league is Soldier Field, which holds 61,500 fans. The 6500 seat difference between that and the new Commanders stadium would be much bigger than the current gap between the two smallest stadiums. State Farm Stadium, which is currently the league’s second smallest stadium, has a capacity of 63400.

This would be a major downsize for the Commanders as their current home, FedEx Field, has a capacity of 82000. The capacity of 55000 is also almost 9000 seats short of their 2021 average attendance of 63691.

Still, it would probably be worth it to get themselves out of a stadium that is widely viewed as the worst in the NFL. Between the history of major injuries on the field, the leaking sewage in the stands, and the possibility that the stands could collapse at any time, there are plenty of reasons to never want to set foot in FedEx Field

Moving stadiums just to lose almost 30000 seats may seem like a bad idea, but it just might be exactly what the Commanders need to deal with one of the organization’s more manageable issues.
