Reigning Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has announced he will not participate in the fourth season of the Netflix hit Formula 1: Drive to Survive. The reality show which follows F1 drivers throughout the season to each race stop has made Formula 1 more popular in the United States than ever before so it came as a shock that Verstappen would not participate.
The 2021 Formula 1 season came down to the final race and even that ended in controversy. Lewis Hamilton lost his race lead to Max Verstappen on the final lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after the race director Michael Masi created conditions that allowed Verstappen to pass Hamilton.
Since it hit Netflix, Formula 1: Drive to Survive has converted millions of Americans into F1 fans. Those same fans were shocked by the news from Max Verstappen that he wouldn’t be participating in Season 4 after winning the world title.
Why Max Verstappen Isn’t Participating In Season 4 Of ‘Drive To Survive
Speaking with the Associated Press, Max Verstappen presented his reasons for not wanting to participate in Season 4 of Drive to Survive and it actually sounds like he has a legitimate gripe if what he’s saying is true. From where I’m sitting, it sounds like he’s frustrated by manufactured drama akin to staged reality TV shows that have been on American TV for years.
“I understand that it needs to be done to boost the popularity in America. But from my side as a driver, I don’t like being part of it.
They faked a few rivalries which they don’t really exist. So I decided to not be a part of it and did not give any more interviews after that because then there is nothing you can show.
I am not really a dramatic show kind of person, I just want facts and real things to happen.”
With the reigning world champ announcing he isn’t participating in season 4 of Formula 1: Drive to Survive Netflix has to ensure that Lewis Hamilton appears, right? Not so fast… Lewis Hamilton has remained silent on whether or not he will appear and hasn’t announced anything after this recent Max Verstappen news.
The fact that Max won’t participate in Season 4 of Drive to Survive is a huge blow to racing fans not just in the United States but all across the planet. Drive to Survive has led to an explosion of Formula 1 popularity in the USA but racing fans across the planet have enjoyed it as well. There’s not a ton of other chatter yet on Twitter about Max’s announcement as it slowly makes its way to fans. I’ve spoken with colleagues who are fellow fans of Formula 1: Drive to Survive and everyone is in unanimous agreement that the show is less enticing without Max Verstappen appearing as reigning world champion.
