  • Chelsea Football Club of the Premier League is currently for sale due to the sanctions imposed on its Russian owner Roman Abramovich.
  • New York Jets owner Woody Johnson is reportedly interested in buying the team.
  • Reports indicate Johnson has launched a $2.5 billion offer for the historic club.

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson has reportedly launched a $2.5 billion bid for the beleaguered Chelsea Football Club, which has found itself caught in the middle of sanctions against Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.

Johnson, 74, hopes to steal the deal away from Saudi Media Group before Friday’s deadline. His £2billion bid is less than the Saudi Media Group’s £2.7billion — but he believes he can win because of his extensive London links.

As the former US ambassador to the UK, and co-owner of the gridiron team the New York Jets for 22 years, he believes he can raise Chelsea’s profile in the American market. [via The Sun]

The Sun’s report includes a quote from a “football source” who clearly has no knowledge about the recent history of the NFL, as the source stated that Johnson has run the Jets successfully and knows a huge amount about the sports industry.” As a long-suffering New York Jets fan, I can assure you that’s not the case when it comes to Johnson, as the Jets are currently the owners of the longest playoff drought in the league.

In addition to Johnson’s bid, Saudi Media Group has also made an offer for the team that’s north of $3 billion.

Should Johnson successfully purchase Chelsea, he would become the latest American to own a “Big Six” Premier League club, as Arsenal (the Kroenke family, owners of the Los Angeles Rams), Liverpool (Fenway Sports Group, owner of the Boston Red Sox), and Manchester United (the Glazer family, owner of the Tampa Bay Bucs). Burnley Football Club also has American ownership.
