A streaker at the World Cup did not even make it on the field before he got annihilated by security at the opening USMNT soccer match in Los Angeles. It was one of the worst attempts I have ever seen.
To make his failure even worse, he wasn’t even a true streaker!
It would be one thing if the soccer fan was over-served and not wearing any clothes— if he really dedicated himself to the bit. Instead, he appeared to be one of those guys who was promised bail money if he ran onto the pitch to promote a brand. Lame.
What is a streaker?
This is a topic for which I have had many discussions. I honestly hate using the word “streaker” in my headline but the words “rogue fan” don’t quite hit as hard. I haven’t yet found a word (or set of words) to better describe this type of individual.
According to the formal definition, a streakers is “a person who runs naked through a public space.” This “attention-seeking act” is “typically done as a prank, a dare, for publicity, or as a form of protest.”
The defining feature of a streaker is whether or not the person is entirely naked. If not, and an intruder runs through a public space while fully or even partially clothed, the correct term is “pitch invader” or “stage invader.” Not nearly the same.
Anyway, the first recorded incidence of streaking dates back to July 5, 1799 in London when a man was arrested for accepting a bet of 10 guineas to run naked through the streets. Australian stockbroker Michael O’Brien became the first person to streak at a major sporting event when he ran naked onto the field during an international rugby match in 1974.
We have not seen many streakers in recent years. There have been quite a few “pitch invaders” but not many naked streakers.
And, unfortunately, the act of streaking has become commoditized. These pitch invaders (who aren’t naked) run onto the field during major sporting events like the Super Bowl as a form of marketing. They wear a branded t-shirt. Their bail money is typically paid by the company for which they were tasked to promote. Boo.
The World Cup pitch invader did not make it past security.
Friday’s streaker was, once again, not a true streaker. He was wearing clothes.
Highly popular Twitch streamers Jasontheween and Yugi had first row seats to the United States’ first soccer match of the World Cup at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. They just so happened to also get first row seats to the failed pitch invasion.
The man was wearing a t-shirt to promote some kind of brand on social media. (I don’t care enough to look it up or give it the promotion he so desperately craves.) He ran back and forth along the perimeter of the crowd as security followed him back and forth with every step. They did not give him a path to the pitch.
And when the man decided to finally make a run for it, he got absolutely clobbered as soon as his feet hit the turf.
Jasontheween & Yugi just witnessed a streaker trying to run into the pitch at the United States vs Paraguay World Cup opener right after USA scored a goal 😳😭 pic.twitter.com/u4bCmLJmvL

It doesn’t get much more pathetic than that. Not only was the streaker not a streaker, he didn’t even make it on the field. Lame.
