First-year New York Yankees radio broadcaster Dave Sims raised a few eyebrows in the offices of The Howard Stern Show when they realized one of his signature calls is “Hey now!” So much so that Howard himself brought it up on the show this week.
“There’s a guy who announces for Major League Baseball, Dave Sims. Whenever someone hits a home run now, he says, ‘Hey now,’” Stern pointed out on his show. “Hey now. Which is a phrase that, of course, we say all the time because we love The Larry Sanders Show.”
Howard Stern then played some audio of Dave Sims using the “Hey now” catchphrase after an Austin Wells home run.
“How long’s he been saying, ‘Hey now,’ Jason?” Stern then asked, and was then told that Sims actually was using that phrase while broadcasting for the Seattle Mariners before coming to New York.
Howard then compared his version of the phrase with the way Sims says it, and in the end gave his approval.
“Whatever, we love ‘Hey now’ so much,” he said. “And so we welcome Dave Sims to the Yankees, because anybody who says ‘Hey now’ has got to be a great guy, right?”
“Well, let’s hope,” Robin Quivers replied. “I think it’s great to keep Gary Shandling’s memory alive.”
This “Hey now” discussion on The Howard Stern Show got so much traction in New York that Dave Sims actually ended up appearing on WFAN to talk about it on Wednesday.
Sims, it turns out, had already been asked about it by Bill Ladson of MLB.com last November.
“I grew up on American Standard music – Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra,” Sims explained. “I love the song, ‘I Got The World On A String.’ It was written in 1932 during the depression and it was recorded by a lot of people. I’m a Sinatra fan and it just hit me. At the end of the song, it goes, ‘Hey now, I’m so in love.’ The other reference comes from Howard Stern and he used the catchphrase, Hey now, a lot [on his radio show]. As opposed to cussing or saying he hit the hell out of the ball, it just hit me one night. I said it a few times, but the Mitch Haniger base hit [in 2021] was so joyous. I was so happy. It’s very effective for me. It really resonated with people.”
