There is one double-edged sword of a question that you will probably be asked at your job interview so you had better prepare for it and know the best answer because there are plenty of wrong answers and pitfalls that will make you look bad. The loaded question that the hiring manager will most likely ask you is, “Why are you looking for another job?” You need to know how to properly handle this critical question so you can ace your job interview.

Simply Hired, the job search website, surveyed over 850 hiring managers in the U.S. and they have the answer that they are looking for. The survey found that 56% of hiring managers are likely to ask, “Why are you looking for a new job?” Responding by saying, “My old boss was a duuchebaggette,” will probably not get you hired. Responding by saying, “That company is a complete joke and only hires incompetent clowns,” will probably not help you and by the way, congratulations you played yourself. Responding by saying, “My salary at my old job sucked and I’m looking to get paid,” will probably not demonstrate that you have a passion for your career.

The Simply Hired survey found that hiring managers have one answer that is best for the question, “Why are you looking for another job?” The survey reported that 78% of hiring managers said this is the best answer, “I’m looking for a role that provides more responsibility and career growth.” This answer doesn’t bad mouth your old employer, boss, or company and shows you have a passion for your career. The survey reported that 88% of hiring managers found bad-mouthing an old boss to be a negative behavior and 87% said that bad-mouthing an old company to be offputting. The survey also found these behaviors to be the most negative during job interviews: arriving late to the interview (93%), whining (92%), and showing lack of preparation (89%).
