December 16th will mark 250 years since the Sons of Liberty told King George III to kick rocks as they destroyed a shipment from the East India Company in an incident that came to be forever known as the Boston Tea Party. It was an event that history recalls as the biggest catalyst ahead of the American Revolution beginning two years later.

Saturday December 9th also marks the 124th Army-Navy Football Game, one of the greatest traditions in all of sports. Putting those two numbers together (250 + 124) you get 347, and that’s the number of pounds of tea in the world’s largest tea bag that’s about to get dumped into the Boston Harbor as a reminder to the British that they couldn’t handle this Colonial smoke, and also as a way for the USAA to make this year’s Army-Navy Spirit Week even more special than usual.

The USAA shared a video of this teabag on TikTok and X. On X, their video has pulled in just 4,423 views in 24 hours which is par for the course on X these days. On TikTok, they might have a set a USAA record. That video has racked up 14 MILLION views and counting in 24 hours.

@usaa

We’re gonna need a bigger cup for this… Cheers to the 250th anniversary of the #BostonTeaParty and 124th meeting of the #ArmyNavy game this Saturday in Foxborough.

Here’s a link to the same video on X, if you’d like to share/see it there. In a press release, the USAA said this record-setting 374-pound bag of tea was sourced from three veteran-owned small businesses.

The bag was first on public display before being paraded around Boston for Army-Navy Spirit Week celebrations and it will then be donated to the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum for their 250th anniversary celebration on December 16 and presumably it will get dumped into the harbor.

The 124th Army-Navy Game In Boston

This historic matchup between the Army Black Knights and Navy Midshipmen will be interesting. Both teams are 5-6 on the season but Army are 2.5pt favorites according to the experts.

The game will be held at Gillette Stadium, home of the Patriots, and there are almost too many traditions to keep track of before this game but one that’s quite awesome is the annual tradition of running the game ball to the stadium.

Beginning at 6 AM on Thursday morning, cadets left Army and started the 200-mile run from West Point, NY to Foxborough, Massachusetts. The first leg was a 70-mile run to Torrington, Connecticut where the game ball was passed off to a new group of runners according to NBC Connecticut. That group will then pound the pavement before passing the game ball off to a third group who take the game ball to the stadium.

Of the 123 Army-Navy Football games that have been played prior to Saturday, Navy holds the edge with 62 wins to Army’s 54 (and 7 ties). I wish I could say I pulled this knowledge from my memory but the US Navy has a website with a ton of wild facts about this historic matchup that sucked me in while doing research on their historic rivalry.

This year marks the first time the Army-Navy Game has been held at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. Last year it was in Philly at The Linc and the year before it was held at Met Life Stadium just down the road from West Point.

There hasn’t been a winning streak from either team since 2018. The last five matchups have gone Army-Navy-Army-Navy-Army. Using streaks isn’t exactly the most reliable metric to pick a winner but there’s certainly been a pattern over the past five years that’ll be interesting to watch.

And I, for one, am extremely stoked to watch the world’s largest tea bag get dumped into the Boston Harbor to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. Shout out to the USAA for making this happen because we, as a society, need to be doing more awesome stunts (like this) just for the sake of doing them.
