  • Ana de Armas is set to star in Andrew Dominik’s Blonde.
  • The film is a biopic about iconic American actress and model Marilyn Monroe.
  • de Armas recently said the NC-17 rated film is the “most beautiful thing she’s ever done.”

We’ve written about Netflix’s nearly-mythical Blonde quite a few times on this website (for obvious reasons), as the Andrew Dominik-directed film not only stars rising A-lister Ana de Armas as the legendary actress and model, but the film as infamously received an NC-17 rating, which is something that Dominik has sounded quite proud of when discussing the film.

Originally scheduled to release last year, Blonde — a film Netflix likely hoped would be an award-season contender — was bumped from the schedule due to rumors that the streamer wasn’t prepared for the graphic nature of the film. Dominik, though, was obviously unrelenting in his commitment to his vision, as Netflix will now be releasing the film as he intended sometime this year.

“It’s a demanding movie,” Dominik said of Blonde earlier this year. “If the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the f—ing audience’s problem. It’s not running for public office. It’s an NC-17 movie about Marilyn Monroe, it’s kind of what you want, right? I want to go and see the NC-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe story.”

Ana de Armas says Blonde is the “most beautiful thing she’s ever done”

Despite starring in the film, de Armas — who has tons of projects in the works these days, as she’s set to star in The Gray Man, recently wrapped Ghosted alongside Chris Evans, and will begin production on a John Wick spinoff this summer — has been largely quiet in regards to her performance in the film. Until recently.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, de Armas recently discussed what it was like making the film, saying that while it was the most “intense work” she’s ever done, Blonde is also the “most beautiful thing” she’s ever done, too.

“It was the most intense work I’ve ever done as an actress,” she said. “It took me a year to prepare for that — research and accent and everything you can imagine. Reading material, and talking to Andrew Dominik for months, and getting ready to start. It was three months of shooting nonstop — like, a crazy schedule.”

“It was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever done. Can’t wait for it to come out. It’s a very special film, and Andrew’s a genius. He’s one of the best filmmakers I’ve ever worked with.” [via Entertainment Weekly]

At this time, while Blonde is expected to release in 2022, it does not have an official release date. We’ll certainly keep you posted when it does.
