Plenty of actors harness some fairly unconventional approaches for the sake of their craft, and that apparently includes Andrew Garfield when you consider he says the ending of one of his movies was shaped by the ghost of a character he portrayed.

Andrew Garfield is probably best known for playing the titular character in the most recent Spider-Man trilogy, but he’s an accomplished actor who initially made a name for himself on the stage before pivoting to the screen and amassing a fairly diverse résumé.

If you’ve seen Under the Silver Lake, you know he’s no stranger to characters that buy into some pretty outlandish theories, but it seems like he may have some pretty ethereal beliefs in real life as well.

In 2021, Garfield starred in Tick, Tick…Boom, an adaptation directed by Lin Manuel-Miranda chronicling the tragically short life of Jonathan Larson, who wrote Rent and the musical the movie was based on before dying of an aortic dissection in 1996 just a couple of weeks before his 36th birthday.

During a recent interview with Variety, Garfield asserted he inhabited Larson to the point where he was able to establish a spiritual connection with him. He went as far as to claim his ghost was giving him notes to pass on to the ban who unleashed Hamilton upon an unsuspecting world, saying:

“There was something very surreal that I felt was happening.

I believe our ancestors are very close all the time. And I could feel that his spirit was so excited that we were going to be telling the story that he didn’t let me sleep. He didn’t let me rest.

He had ideas. Nonstop. He wanted me to give notes to Lin-Manuel Miranda about the end of the film.”

When you consider the film earned an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and Garfield earned a fair amount of praise for his performance, it appears Larson’s spirit did something right.
