It’s been awhile since we’ve had one of those weird audio illusions, like “The Dress” for your ears, go viral on the internet.

But here we go again.

Of course, this being 2023, this latest audio illusion comes to us, naturally, from a TikTok video. The brain-bending sound was posted by Jarred Jermaine (@jarredjermaine) recently and asks, “What do you hear?”

Supposedly, the sound, which emanates from a toy of the character Brainstorm from the cartoon TV show Ben 10 is saying its name, “Brainstorm” when they button is pressed on it.

Just one problem… once you are told that it sounds like something else, it DOES sound like something else.

Take a listen.

@jarredjermaine Which one do you hear? Green Needle, or Brainstorm? #hear #hearing #test #challenge #reaction #greenneedle #brainstorm #ear ♬ original sound – jarred jermaine

Did you hear the word “brainstorm?” Or did you hear the words “green needle” when the button was pressed on the toy?

Because I sure as heck heard “green needle.” And that’s literally all I can hear, no matter how many times I watch the TikTok video.

“Watch the video again but try closing your eyes and see what you hear,” Jarred Jermaine advises.

Over 1,500 comments have been made on the video and, as is always the case with things like this, the internet cannot come to a consensus.

People are hearing everything from brainstorm and green needle to brain needle, orange juice, green storm, grey needle, and perhaps the best answer, “a slower version of that thing in the intro to AHS [American Horror Story].”

“It depends which word you are looking at, what word you are thinking of, and also if your eyes are closed and are looking away,” Jermaine added.

One thing is for certain, however, despite the jokes in some of the comments. No one is hearing “laurel” or “yanny.”

Now then, with that (not even close to being) settled… what do you see here?
