It’s been about a week since the Swedish DJ known as Avicii was found dead while vacationing in Oman. He was just 28. The artist left behind his parents, Klas and Anki, and three siblings, David, Linda, and Anton.

The family of the man they knew as Tim Bergling released a statement today expressing their loved one’s struggle to find balance and meaning in life and his disdain for the spotlight.

Stockholm, 26 April 2018

Our beloved Tim was a seeker, a fragile artistic soul searching for answers to existential questions.

An over-achieving perfectionist who travelled and worked hard at a pace that led to extreme stress.

When he stopped touring, he wanted to find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most – music.

He really struggled with thoughts about Meaning, Life, Happiness.

He could not go on any longer.

He wanted to find peace.

Tim was not made for the business machine he found himself in; he was a sensitive guy who loved his fans but shunned the spotlight.

Tim, you will forever be loved and sadly missed.

The person you were and your music will keep your memory alive.

We love you,

Your family

Although phrases like “He could not go on any longer” may lead one to believe he could have taken his own life, an autopsy revealed that there was no foul play involved in his passing.

Matt’s love of writing was born during a sixth grade assembly when it was announced that his essay titled “Why Drugs Are Bad” had taken first prize in D.A.R.E.’s grade-wide contest. The anti-drug people gave him a $50 savings bond for his brave contribution to crime-fighting, and upon the bond’s maturity 10 years later, he used it to buy his very first bag of marijuana.
