Brad Pitt Turned Down One Of The Most Iconic Action Roles Of The 1990s

Brad Pitt is just fuckin’ vibing these days, y’all. He’s sober and he’s racking in the accolades. He’s single and he’s flirting with his old flame Jennifer Aniston for the world to see. He’s charming the pants off of Hollywood with his award speeches. His one of the most influential producers in the game these days. He’s about to take home an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He’s just straight vibing.

And because of said vibe, Pitt has been seemingly more contrite and self-reflective than he’s ever been before. Just take one of his award speeches from a couple of weeks ago where he plainly thanked Bradley Cooper for helping him get sober.

That newfound honesty has led to some pretty interesting reveals over the last few weeks, including that Pitt apparently turned down the role of Neo in The Matrix back in the 90s.

“I did pass on The Matrix. I took the red pill. That’s the only one I’m naming,” he explained later in his speech, adding that the festival would need “two nights” to honor him if he elaborated on all the great movie’s he’s passed on. “I wasn’t offered two or three. Only the first one. Just to clarify that. I come from a place, maybe it’s my upbringing, if I didn’t get it, then it wasn’t mine. I really believe [the role] was never mine. It’s not mine. It was someone else’s and they go and make it.” [via Entertainment Weekly]

Pitt isn’t the only A-lister who turned down the iconic role, as Will Smith also famously passed on playing the Chosen One.
