A man turned on his TV and noticed a Kroger commercial that features two slabs of steak. He took a closer look and noticed something gross crawling on the meat, sparking debate about the commercial.
In a video with over 700,000 views, TikToker Avagrantman (@avagrantman) pauses the commercial to replay the section that shows the steak. He presses play and zooms in on the surface of the steak. Two small, bug-like white dots seem to crawl on the steak.
“Are those bugs crawling across that meat?” he exclaims. “I can’t believe it. … How did they miss that?”
Are There Actually Bugs On The Kroger Steak?
The video quickly went viral on other social media platforms, like Reddit and X, with viewers questioning what the white dots really are. On the r/kroger subreddit, many members suggest that the steak was “AI-generated,” and the editors simply didn’t catch the gross added detail.
“Its probably ai generated. Kroger has leaned BIG into the ai gen horseshit,” one suggested.
“Haha serves Kroger right for using AI to cut costs,” another said.
These comments refer to Kroger’s recent company-wide AI push, which impacts just every facet of the company, including its customer and worker operations.
Another suggested that Kroger tried to generate “seasoning” onto the steak, which created the crawling bug illusion. They posted another Kroger commercial which seems to have more successfully used AI-generated seasoning that resembles the “bug.”
Do Viewers Worry About Kroger Steak Quality?
In the comments of the viral TikTok, some questioned the quality of Kroger’s meat products and said they are reluctant to eat them going forward.
“Subconsciously, trying to get us used to eating kroger quality food,” one said.
“Mmm…on my way to Kroger to pick me up some steak……..NOT,” a second viewer remarked.
A third joked, “They were probably sued for false advertising, and they decided to show what their actual products look like.”
Others said they hope the mishap will encourage the grocery store chain to employ more human marketing experts.
“If they hired a food stylist this wouldn’t have happened,” a commenter suggested.
“The way my jaw dropped open… Wow. It’s almost like you need humans to create things for other humans,” another wrote.
