The British Christmas Tree Growers Association (BCTGA) says the earliest that you should purchase a live Christmas tree is December 1st because a real tree should last for four weeks with proper care. Even though your tree will be dry tinder after 12 days because you have a brown thumb. However, a new report suggests that the earlier you start decorating your house for the holidays, the happier you will be. Sorry for the scrooges out there, but expect a tidal wave of tinsel, garland, as well as red and green balls coming soon.

Want to bust out the wreaths, Christmas lights, and a giant Spongebob blowup snowglobe lawn decoration before Thanksgiving? Psychoanalyst Steve McKeown says go for it! McKeown says bringing out the Christmas decorations earlier warms your cockles and brings happiness. The reasoning is that it extends the holiday season and gets you feeling jolly. The decorations bring back memories of your childhood when you weren’t dead inside. The childish excitement of the holidays conjures warm and happy feelings even with the stress of finding the perfect gift for your girlfriend that you will surely disappoint because you aren’t buying an engagement ring. Again. For the eighth straight Christmas.

Amy Morin, a psychotherapist, agreed and said the holiday season stirs up the nostalgia of Christmas past, a simpler time when you got gifts and didn’t have to buy anyone anything. Plus that is when Santa was still real to you dammit. Another reason that people cherish the holiday season is that it conjures up memories of loved ones who may have passed on. Decorating the Christmas tree may have been an annual tradition they did with that long-lost relative. So get out there and start decorating your ass off and hanging those stockings by the chimney with care and drive your neighbor nuts with your early Xmas decorations and especially those huge front yard displays that have blinking lights and a speaker that blares “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” on loop.
