Woman Is Married To Husband For 7 Years. Then She Divorces Him After What She Finds In His Basement: ‘Sounds Like A Nightmare’

People often refer to their spouses as their other halves because that is how well they’re meant to know them. However, in a viral TikTok story, it became apparent that one woman, who was married to a Freemason, never really knew her husband at all.

In a two-part TikTok that garnered almost 700,000 views combined, online storyteller Rebekah (@rebekahjourney) broke down the spooky circumstances that led to the dissolution of her marriage.

From vampire encounters to alleyway “monsters,” TikTok is certainly a little spookier than usual. But Rebekah’s story, which was submitted by a viewer, will really make your blood run cold.

BroBible reached out to Rebekah via email.

What Happened With This Marriage?

In the story, Rebekah explained that this woman divorced her husband after discovering something shocking in their basement. They were reportedly married for seven years. She refers to the husband and wife as “Marcus” and “Laura.” While Marcus was charming and successful, he was very cagey and private. Laura was aware Marcus was a Freemason. He wore a square and compass ring, but he’d never tell her anything about his meetings. He’d instead kiss her forehead and tell her not to worry.

After marriage, things became increasingly strange. He would leave at midnight and return at sunrise. He’d also receive mysterious phone calls when, after the phone went off once, he’d leave the room.

Things got weirder one night when he was outside staring at the moon. After she called him two times, he turned to face her. His face was completely blank.

While Laura put this down to paranoia, the strangeness continued at her grandma’s funeral. A man approached her, asked if she was married to Marcus, and “looked like he had seen a ghost.”

A few months later, Marcus left for an “emergency” lodge meeting. When Laura went on his laptop, she found a hidden folder of photos. Men were standing in dark robes inside strange buildings only lit by a candle. There were symbols on the floor and people wearing freaky animal masks. There was also a photo of her wedding day she hadn’t seen before. In the background, there were twelve men in robes watching her as she stood at the altar.

She then heard noises in the basement, which prompted her to go downstairs.

What Happened In The Basement?

The basement door was open, despite her being sure that she closed it. Behind some shelving she never really paid attention to before was a small door that led to an even smaller room. The room was covered in symbols and had melted candle wax on the floor. In the center of the room was a small wooden box, which contained photos of strangers and photos of her. Some were taken when she was asleep, others when she was at work, and others before she and Marcus had even met.

At the bottom of the box was a note in her husband’s handwriting that said: “Select, Prove, Accept it.”

Marcus, in turn, acted strangely when he returned. After going to the basement, he asked Laura questions. She explains that she saw the box. He apparently looked at her as if she “ruined something” and said she wasn’t meant to have seen that until later. When she asked him what the box meant, he gave very vague answers. At that point, she had had enough. They divorced within six months, and he never fought it. He accepted it.

Laura moved three states away. One afternoon, nearly a year later, she finds a single white envelope in her letterbox with just a photograph in it. She still doesn’t know what it means, but says she’s too scared to find out.

How Did Commenters React?

“My father was a freemason,” one commenter wrote. “I know enough to not look further.”

“One of the most haunted places in my cities is the former freemasons retirement community,” another added.

A third user remarked, “The divorce would’ve happened after he said don’t worry about it after him being out all night.”

While a fourth said, “Laura should have ran when she heard ‘lodge business.'”

What Is A Freemason?

The fraternal order of the Free and Accepted Masons is known as the world’s largest secret society, according to Britannica. The organization is dedicated to things like mutual aid, fellowship, and moral discipline. According to the Grand Lodge of Ohio, freemasonry  “unites men of good character who, though of different religious, ethnic or social backgrounds, share a belief in the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of mankind.”

The site adds that Masons essentially take an oath to “act with respect and understanding toward others and to aid and support those who are in need.” Purportedly, Masons’ core values are brotherly love towards one another, “relief” (which involves helping people in distress), and truth, which involves “using knowledge and understanding to improve ourselves, our families and our communities.”

Symbolism is central to Freemasonry, with the most famous example being the square and compass symbol. The Grand Lodge of Ohio says this symbol stands for morality, honesty, and fairness. As for rituals, The Square magazine reports that these rituals revolve around three ceremonial stages known as “degrees.”  These are known as the “Entered Apprentice,” Fellowcraft,” and “Master Mason.” Each one is a different degree of prestige within the Freemason community.

These ceremonies themselves are “a carefully choreographed series of events that incorporate symbolism, allegories, and moral instruction,” Square reports.

Alongside the degree ceremonies, opening and closing rituals are also performed at Freemason meetings. The opening ritual involves “invoking the presence of the Supreme Being.” This is basically a non-denominational way of referring to a deity so men of different faiths can participate. The closing rituals “focus on gratitude for the time spent together in brotherhood, with reminders to apply moral lessons learned within the lodge to daily life.”
