Silver Lining: These Dark Times Have Produced Some Anthems That Slap

Composite

If there’s anything we can take solace in during a global crisis, it’s that dark times breed lasting art. Always has. Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong revolutionized jazz during the Great Depression. The Civil Rights movement gifted the world Nina Simone. Train released Drops of Jupiter when Becca Davidson dumped me for my best friend in eighth grade.

The Tom Hanks Disease (THD-19) is no different.

The pain and solitude brought forth by this contagion has birthed music that will define what promises to be a trying time in our history.

Here are the defining sounds of a crisis.

Matt Keohan Avatar
Matt’s love of writing was born during a sixth grade assembly when it was announced that his essay titled “Why Drugs Are Bad” had taken first prize in D.A.R.E.’s grade-wide contest. The anti-drug people gave him a $50 savings bond for his brave contribution to crime-fighting, and upon the bond’s maturity 10 years later, he used it to buy his very first bag of marijuana.
