After saying in a recent interview that he would consider reviving Chappelle’s Show, Dave Chappelle doubled down on the sentiment during while speaking at Eddie Murphy’s 2026 AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony over the weekend.
While speaking at the 2026 AFI Life Achievement Award honoring Eddie Murphy on Saturday, Dave Chappelle recounted a recent visit to Eddie Murphy’s home where the two talked about Charlie Murphy for the first time since he passed from leukemia in April 2017.
Dave Chappelle told Eddie Murphy he would reboot Chappelle’s Show is Eddie took over the parts his late brother Charlie played
“For the first time, I talked to him since Charlie had passed,” Chappelle recalled. “I hadn’t seen him or really had an occasion to speak to Eddie about it. And in the midst of the conversation, he said I should do a Chappelle’s Show movie. And I said that would be tough. That’s your brother. So Eddie, if I do it, you do the Charlie parts. And let’s go.”
Dave Chappelle told a really sweet story about hanging with Eddie Murphy at his house two weeks ago as his grandkids played in the pool. They talked for the first time about Eddie’s late brother, Charlie, and Dave reveals it was Eddie who suggested he do a Chappelle’s Show movie… pic.twitter.com/ymMxv9BQfx

Charlie Murphy was one of the breakout stars of the original Chappelle’s Show, best known for the “Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories” skits, particularly the legendary Prince and Rick James sketches.
Earlier this month, Chappelle said in an interview with the Associated Press that he was “considering” bringing the series back, although it would have to be under a new name due to copyright issues.
Chappelle famously walked away from the series — which was a massive cultural phenomenon at the time — in 2005 due to stress and creative differences, leading Comedy Central to suspend production in the midst of filming the third season.
