Dave Chappelle gave an NPR interview this week in which he expressed resentment over Republicans weaponizing his transgender material. Former fans of his on social media, however, aren’t buying it.
The specific incident that Dave Chappelle recounted involved Rep. Lauren Boebert posting a photo of the two of them at a Capitol Hill event with a caption implying “just two genders.”
Dave Chappelle attempted to claim that his many trans jokes weren’t political statements but no one is buying it
Chappelle said he resented having his material co-opted for political purposes he didn’t intend and maintained the jokes were standard stand-up comedy and not intended to be a political statement.
The issue with Chappelle’s retroactive framing of his material, though, is that he released numerous specials over multiple years built largely around transgender material that he doubled down on repeatedly. The idea that he’s now the aggrieved party because conservatives are using his jokes is now a classic case of “you made this bed, now lie in it.”
Y’all bet not let Dave Chapelle play this “aw shucks I had no idea’er” dumb role in your faces. He knew EXACTLY the attention he was courting. He just got his bags and now ready to jump on the “right” side of the narrative. Very Kanye activity.

He’s back peddling cause he doesn’t wanna be associated with fascists but his work was vital to the rights push for transness to be politicized further in there agenda to eradicate us.
No actual remorse for the harm he’s caused but instead being mad that he got used. Pathetic https://t.co/RJSgQKcJqN

“I was on Capitol Hill, and everybody ran up to take pictures with me from every congressional office. And I just take pictures with whoever asked… At first, it was CBC people. Then here comes Lauren Boebert and she said, ‘Can I get a picture?’ And I had already taken 40 pictures. I didn’t want to say no in front of everybody, but I didn’t know the phrase ‘I respectfully decline.’ So I just took the picture,” Chappelle said on NPR’s Newsmakers podcast.
“And then she posted the picture and says something to the effect of, ‘Just two people that know that it’s just two genders.’ Just instantly, like, weaponized or politicized. So I got to the arena, and I lit her ass up for doing that. And she should never do that to a person like me.”
Dave famously said one of the reasons he quit Chappelle’s Show was because he saw white people laughing at black people, instead of with black people, and he turned around and learned absolutely nothing. Revolutionary https://t.co/g0gd5QSbUc

If Dave Chappelle didn’t expect his trans “jokes” to be weaponized by Republicans as hate speech and policy, he’s the most oblivious person on the planet.
But the thing is… Chappelle isn’t oblivious. He’s highly intelligent and perceptive. He knows exactly what he’s doing.… https://t.co/rWynHbvNTn

The problem Chappelle faces here is that he’s simply too smart to play this dumb.
