Elon Musk caused a meme-storm on the Internet when he announced the birth of his son with Grimes on May 4th, 2020. Go figure a man inching humanity towards widespread space travel has the birth of a child on Star Wars Day.

The new baby’s is what tripped up the Internet. The eccentric billionaire founder of Paypal, Tesla, and Space-X announced that his son will be named X Æ A-12.

X Æ A-12.

That name doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue as easily as, say, “Kyle.” As Musk and Grimes noted on Twitter shortly after the arrival of X Æ A-12, it’s derived from the Greek alphabet, X is the symbol for the letter chi. Æ is pronounced “ash” in the Scandinavian alphabet. And the A-12 is for the Lockheed A-12, a CIA aircraft codenamed Archangel.

On Thursday, Elon Musk went on the Joe Rogan Experience for the second time to talk about life, coronavirus stay-at-home orders, aliens, and space travel – pretty much the full gamut of the Musk / Rogan playbook.

And unlike last time, no blunts were smoked this time.

So how do you pronounce Elon Musk’s son’s name?

Rogan asked Musk about how you pronounce his son’s name.

Rogan notes “you will never forget your son being born in such a weird time. The weirdest of times, really.”

“How do you say the name?” Rogan asks. “Is it a placeholder?”

Elon answers:

“First of all, it was my partner who mostly came up with the name… It’s just X, as in the letter X, and the Æ is pronounced ‘ash’…”

At this point, Rogan starts to chortle with laughter, causing Musk to smirk.

“A-12 is my contribution. It means Archangel 12, a precursor to the SR-71… It’s true..”

Rogan giggles again.

“The SR 71 came from a CIA program called ‘Archangel’ – It’s the Archangel project.”

So I guess we were pronouncing it all wrong:

Musk continues: “I guess it’s better being older and having a kid. I appreciate it more. Babies are awesome”
